The ground floor works as normal exhibition space, and the upper deck adds meeting rooms, hospitality or a viewing area above the show floor.

It is the one way to increase usable area without buying more square metres, and it is also the most heavily regulated thing you can build at a trade show.

When a second storey is actually worth it

Double-decker stands are often chosen for presence. That is the weakest reason to build one, because height alone can be achieved more cheaply with a tower or hanging signage.

The reason that holds up is meeting capacity. If your show is where deals get done and your bottleneck is private meeting space, a second storey converts your existing footprint into meeting rooms without taking anything from the ground-floor display.

Useful questions before committing:

How many private meetings do you need to hold per day?

Are you currently turning meetings away, or holding them in the aisle?

Would the same budget buy a larger single-storey plot instead?

Do you exhibit at this show every year, or is this a one-off?

That third question matters most. A double-decker on a small plot sometimes costs more than simply taking a bigger ground-floor space, and a bigger plot has none of the approval complexity.

What a double decker stand involves

Structural engineering

An upper deck carries people, furniture and load. That means engineered structure, calculated floor loading, a staircase meeting the venue’s requirements, and edge protection. This is not a design decision, it is an engineering one, and it has to be signed off.

Organiser and venue approval

Every UAE venue treats two-storey builds as a special case. Expect to submit structural drawings, load calculations and a method statement, and expect the deadline for those to fall well before the show. Some halls restrict which areas can take a double-decker at all, usually because of height limits or floor loading.

Confirm three things before you design anything:

Is a double-decker permitted in your hall and on your stand number?

What is the maximum build height there?

What is the organiser’s submission deadline for structural approval?

Build time and access

Two storeys take longer to build than one and need more of the organiser’s build window. On shows with tight build-up schedules this can be the deciding constraint rather than budget.

Floor space cost

A staircase takes ground-floor area, and so do the support columns. A second storey does not give you double the space; it gives you the upper deck minus what the access takes downstairs. Factor that in when comparing against simply taking a larger plot.

What the upper deck is best used for

Private meetings — the most common and most defensible use

Hospitality — seating, refreshments, somewhere to take a client out of the noise

Viewing — at shows with a demonstration area or stage, an elevated position has real value

Storage and staff space — less glamorous, and it frees the entire ground floor for display

What it is generally not good for is product display. Visitors browsing a hall do not climb stairs to see products. Keep the display downstairs and put the reason-to-climb upstairs.

Double decker compared with the alternatives

Double decker

Larger single-storey plot

Tower or hanging signage

Adds meeting space

Yes

Yes

No

Adds visibility

Yes

Limited

Yes

Approval complexity

Highest

Standard

Moderate

Build time

Longest

Standard

Short

Costs ground-floor area

Yes, staircase and columns

No

Minimal

If the goal is visibility rather than capacity, a tower or hanging element usually achieves it for far less money and approval effort.

Can a double decker be reused?

It depends on how it was engineered. A custom-fabricated two-storey structure is generally built for one footprint. A system-based double-decker using a modular framework can often be reconfigured for different spaces, which changes the economics considerably if you exhibit regularly.

If reuse matters, raise it at the brief stage rather than afterwards, because it determines how the structure is engineered from the start. Modular exhibition stands and Maxima stand systems both support multi-level configurations.

Frequently asked questions

What is a double decker exhibition stand?

A two-storey stand built within a single floor plot, with the upper deck typically used for meetings, hospitality or viewing.

How much does a double decker exhibition stand cost?

It is quoted per project, because cost is driven by footprint, structure, finish and venue requirements rather than by a standard rate. Expect it to be materially more than a single-storey stand of the same footprint, and compare it against the cost of simply taking a larger plot.

Do I need approval to build a double decker stand?

Yes. UAE venues require structural drawings, load calculations and a method statement submitted and approved before build-up. Some halls do not permit two-storey builds at all, so confirm before designing.

How much extra space does a second storey give me?

Less than double. The staircase and structural supports take ground-floor area, so the net gain is the upper deck minus that access.

What should go on the upper deck?

Meetings, hospitality, staff space or storage. Not product display, because visitors will not climb stairs to browse.

Can a double decker stand be reused at another show?

System-based ones often can be reconfigured. Custom-fabricated ones are usually built for one footprint. Decide at the brief stage.

Working out whether it is the right call

Orange Fairs designs and builds custom and system-based exhibition stands, including multi-level structures, with our own workshop in Dubai and regular builds at Dubai World Trade Centre, ADNEC, Expo City Dubai and Expo Centre Sharjah. We prepare and submit the structural drawings and method statements organisers require.

Send us your show, stand number and dimensions and we will tell you honestly whether a second storey is worth it for your situation, or whether the same budget is better spent elsewhere. The 3D design concept costs nothing.

Related reading: custom built exhibition stands, exhibition stand ideas by stand size, and the exhibition booth setup timeline.

A double decker exhibition stand is a two-storey structure built within a single floor plot.
