That is the wrong input. The two options answer different questions, and the question is not which looks better — it is how many times you will exhibit.

Get that right and the rest follows. Get it wrong and you either overspend on a stand you use once, or spend three years re-buying the same booth.

Shell scheme vs modular: the two options, briefly

A shell scheme booth is supplied by the organiser. You are allocated a numbered space in a row of identical booths and the organiser erects the shell: dividing walls, a fascia name board, floor covering. Your money goes into branding and fit-out inside it. At the end of the show the structure goes back to the organiser’s contractor. You own nothing.

A modular stand is a reusable system structure that you own or hire as a kit. It travels to the next show, reconfigures to a different footprint, and takes new graphics. Higher upfront cost, and it is yours afterwards.

Industry bodies such as the UFI track how exhibitors are shifting toward reusable stand systems. The third option, a fully custom build, is covered separately in our shell scheme or custom booth comparison. This piece is about the middle ground, because that is the decision most UAE exhibitors are actually facing and the one least often explained.

Shell scheme vs modular on cost per show, not cost

Here is the arithmetic that settles shell scheme vs modular. Work it out on your own quotes rather than on anyone’s published figures.

Shell scheme costs roughly the same every time. Our own shell scheme booth rental starts at AED 650 for a 3x3m booth, AED 1,100 for a 3x3m corner and AED 2,200 for a branded 3x6m stand. Exhibit four times and you pay something close to four times that, because you are renting the fit-out afresh at each show.

Modular front-loads the cost. You pay for the structure once. At every show after that you are paying only for graphics, transport, labour and storage — a fraction of the first bill. So the line starts higher and flattens.

The two lines cross somewhere, and where they cross is the whole decision:

Shows in two years

Usually the better answer

Why

One

Shell scheme

Reuse is worth nothing. Spend the budget on how it looks, not on owning it.

Two to three

Genuinely either

Depends on whether the stands are the same size and whether you have storage.

Four or more

Modular

The structure is paid off and every later show costs graphics and labour only.

Two things people leave out of that sum. Storage between shows is a real cost on a modular stand, and it is the one that surprises people. And graphics are not reusable in the way the structure is — dates, messaging and product lines change, so budget for a reprint most times even when the frame is the same.

The variables that override the arithmetic

Four situations where the show count is not the deciding factor.

Your stand sizes vary a lot

Modular earns its keep by reconfiguring. If you are allocated 9 sqm at one show and 36 sqm at another, a system designed for that range handles both. If every show is a 3×3 inline booth, there is less reconfiguration to benefit from.

You exhibit outside the UAE

Shipping a modular kit internationally adds freight, customs documentation and risk to every show. For a regional programme across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, transport is a short drive. For an exhibitor splitting between the UAE and Europe, the economics tighten considerably.

You have nowhere to put it

A modular stand needs storing for the eleven months it is not in a hall. If you have no warehouse, that is a recurring line item — ask whoever supplies it whether storage is included, because the answer changes the comparison.

The organiser has already allocated you a shell

This one removes the choice entirely, and it is the most common situation of all. If your space booking includes a shell scheme booth, the structure is erected before you arrive and it is not yours to replace. What you can still change is everything inside and across it.

The option most exhibitors end up at

Shell scheme vs modular is rarely a clean choice between the two. The route that suits a lot of regional exhibitors is a well-executed shell scheme while the programme is still small, moving to a system once the show count justifies it.

That is not a compromise. A shell scheme booth with a continuous full-height graphic, lighting aimed at the wall rather than the carpet, a branded counter and somewhere to hide the boxes outperforms a modular stand that has been specified carelessly. Our guide to shell scheme booth design covers how to get that right.

And when the count does justify the move, the step up does not have to be to a basic system. Maxima is a modular system with far less visible jointing, so a finished stand reads closer to a custom build while staying fully reusable.

Shell scheme vs modular at a glance

Shell scheme

Modular

Who owns the structure

The organiser

You

Upfront cost

Lowest

Higher

Cost at show four

Much the same as show one

Graphics, transport and labour only

Footprint flexibility

Fixed by the allocation

Reconfigures between shows

Height

Fixed by the shell

To the venue limit

Storage between shows

None needed

Required, and a real cost

Lead time

Shortest

Longer first time, short after

Best for

One or two shows, smaller footprint

Three or more shows a year

Frequently asked questions

Shell scheme vs modular: what is the actual difference?

A shell scheme is supplied by the organiser for that show only and returns to their contractor afterwards. A modular stand is a reusable system structure you own or hire as a kit, which travels to the next show and reconfigures to a different footprint.

Is modular cheaper than shell scheme?

Not at the first show. It costs more upfront and less at every show after, because you are only paying for graphics, transport, labour and storage. The crossover is usually somewhere around the third or fourth show, depending on your sizes and storage costs.

How many shows before modular makes sense?

As a rule of thumb, four or more over two years. Below that, shell scheme executed well is usually the better spend. Between two and three it genuinely depends on whether your stand sizes are similar and whether storage is included.

Can I use a modular stand if the organiser gave me a shell scheme booth?

Generally no. The shell is erected before you arrive and belongs to the official contractor. What you can change is everything inside and across it — graphics, lighting, counter, display units and storage.

Does a modular stand look as good as a custom build?

It depends on the system and the specification. Basic systems show their jointing. Premium systems such as Maxima have far less visible jointing and read much closer to a custom finish while staying reusable.

What is the hidden cost of a modular stand?

Storage between shows, and graphics. The structure is reusable but messaging, dates and product lines change, so budget for a reprint most times even when the frame stays the same.

Shell scheme vs modular is usually decided by looking at pictures.
